The INTERVIEW

Question 1

What are some key factors to consider when choosing a major?

Between passion and career prospect, which ultimately decides?

“I will say the tips are firstly trying.

 Try everything.”

“The answer is to follow your heart, if you know what you want. Otherwisego with your head and think logically, what seems valuable in the market.”

Question 2

Could you please share with us your views on minoring or double majoring?

“You need to pick up a lot of tools so that you can fight better.”

“If you can pick up more majors and more minors, fantastic.

I would encourage you to do more.”

I want to explain to you about 3Cs: critical thinking, communication, and collaboration.

There’s something called content knowledge. There’s something called meta-knowledge. Content knowledge is information that can be learned and memorized, but this stuff is changing all the time. What the information is really telling you is the “How”. This is called critical thinking. I want you to think theoretically. What can you extrapolate? What are the critical elements? Can you repeat what you learn in another domain?

You can solve the problem, but you can’t explain yourself. It takes you 30 minutes other than 3 minutes to get them across. And people don’t have enough time. Communication is an art. Be flexible and make sure you practice communication in Mandarin, in English or communicate with art, with graphics, with animation.

Difficult problems are solved by teams of people with different majors and minors. But believe it or not, working with very smart people from different backgrounds who think differently is not easy. Everybody is so strong headed. Collaboration and negotiation are as difficult as learning knowledge. But still practice, don’t run away from it.

Question

What is it like for a major

and a job to match?

To what extent will a major impact internships and future careers?

“They are not always related.”

“Your major, your minor, or whatever, it’s not what gets you the job.”

“People are hiring for your 3Cs, honestly.”

“Unless it’s structural engineering, and medicine, and law.

For these kinds of disciplines, lives are at stake, you need accreditation.”

We have successful students who study one thing and went into something else.

For example, Siwan Lu she’s studied chemical engineering and business. She’s the first one to become a CEO of a subsidiary of an insurance company. And last month, that was just in a newspaper, she was invited to World Economic Forum Young Leaders Club. That forum–––Young Leaders Forum–––Mark Zuckerberg is in that forum. Chemical engineering got her into insurance. Now she is in the most elite.

We have another student, Camerie, she studied industrial engineering and business. Afterwards, she went to work for an iBank. She found that kind of boring, so she went to get a law degree. Today, she is a practicing lawyer in IPO firms. She can help companies go public whether it’s a tech company, a fintech. and she can handle all the financial part.

We have another one––a very interesting guy. He’s an Indian guy, Tanei, speaks Cantonese, grew up in Hong Kong. He did civil engineering, and guess what he’s doing. He’s been out for only 4 years, he owns 3 restaurants now in TOK and Northpoint. I mean he’s so young and he just keeps opening new restaurants in the hippest place.

So “there’s a master in every trade”. The key is, if you have the 3Cs, you can just go into different thingsin different fields.

I had four careers. I was in R&D doing software development, then Iwas in consulting, and then I was helping startup companies around 500 million USdollars set up their operation in Greater China. And now I’m in academia. So, Ijust keep evolving as the situation change and do what’s fun at the time. I’mjust still doing the same as I’ve always done, applying 3Cs.

Question 4

When it comes to a dual degree program,

do you think if there are any myths or stereotypes about it?

”The Dualers have a lot of reputations. The Dualers are the “invincible” ,

the very hardworking.”

“There are also myths that you have to be a nerd to be in computer science.”

“I think it’s another myth that people have one career: the major leads to a job, the job becomes a career. That’s no longer true.”

Question 5

Any advice to offer our students when they feel discouraged about their majors?

“don’t worry about it whatever major it is,

if it’s “not the most popular one.”

“Don’t worry,

as long as you practice your 3Cs.”

“When people are hiring,

they’re really looking for that.”

6

Question

Every year you teach some special projects which are usually hot topics of the moment. How did you come up with such an innovative course?

♪\(^o^)/♪

Question 7

Since you are an expert in case analysis,

which is a crucial skill

needed in business competitions,

could you please give the students some advice?

”Firstly, I recommend you take the class.

If you’d never took a class from the dual degree or GBUS or LABU,

you’re going to fail miserably.”

“Picking a class will guide you through it slowly

and then find a couple friends from the class and sign up for the competition and join a club.”

Question 8

Is it better to go straight for a job or get a TPG or MBA degree for business students?

“It’s not about the degree.”

“It’s about can you think, can you can communicate, can you talk right.”

“A degree is not going to get you a good job,

but good brains can.”

“If you have a good reason and you need that TPG, then go for it.”

9

Question

What is your your view on an internship or UROP?

How to choose between research degree and taking a job straight away?

“The people who like to go to work tend to be generalist. The researchers tend to be specialist.”

“Find out, are you the research type or are you the generalists the applied type practitioner.”

Question 10

Could you end the interview your one-sentence philosophy of life?

“Hardship in life may be a blessing in disguise.”

You may be jealous that somebody grew up in a rich family and went to the best schools. Maybe you come from a small village no you don’t have all the fancy stuff. But kids who grow up in a luxurious environment usually have no TQ. And you were blessed with a training as a child to be tenacious to be a fighter. These hardships in life may be a blessing. Take advantage of it. Appreciate life.
